Hyundai Nexo in Korea: The Hydrogen SUV and Where to Fill It

The Hyundai Nexo (넥쏘 in Korean) is a hydrogen fuel cell SUV. It runs on electricity that its fuel cell makes from hydrogen, so you fill it at a hydrogen station instead of plugging it in. In Korea, you can check hydrogen stations, their prices and their hours online before you buy.

The current Nexo is the second generation. Hyundai launched the original in March 2018 and put the new one on sale in Korea on June 10, 2025. This guide covers the 2027 model year sold now, what it costs in Korea, and the practical part: finding hydrogen and paying for it.

    How we checked

Specs and prices come from Hyundai’s Korean Nexo page and its price list for the 2027 Nexo, which went on sale on July 14, 2026. Background on the second-generation launch comes from Hyundai Motor Group’s June 10, 2025 press release. Station, fuel price and subsidy details come from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment’s zero-emission vehicle portal (무공해차 통합누리집, ev.or.kr). Overseas availability comes from Hyundai’s official US, UK and Australian sites.

We didn’t use dealer sites, reviews or forums. Where a figure is our own calculation, we say so.

    The short answer

    • What it is: a hydrogen fuel cell SUV. The tank holds 6.69 kg of hydrogen.
    • Range: up to 720 km (about 447 miles, by our conversion), Hyundai’s figure for the Exclusive trim on 18-inch wheels.
    • Price in Korea: from ₩76,470,000 after eco-friendly car tax benefits (Hyundai calls this approximate).
    • Filling up: about 5 minutes at a 700-bar station. The government portal’s 2026 average price is ₩10,377 per kg (checked October 27, 2026).
    • Abroad: as of October 28, 2026, listed by Hyundai in the UK, but not in the US or Australia.

The imperial figures are our conversion. Hyundai’s footnote says refueling time and the amount you get depend on the station’s pressure and temperature, the state of the tank and the season.

    Range depends on the wheels

The 720 km figure is Hyundai’s, for the Exclusive trim on 18-inch tires. Hyundai’s Korean page says it’s the combined efficiency reported to the government, 107.6 km per kg, multiplied by the 6.69 kg tank.

The price list gives lower reported figures for two other setups. Hyundai doesn’t print a range for them, so we did the same multiplication.

Setup (curb weight)Combined efficiencyRange on a full tank
    18-inch wheels (1,870 kg)107.6 km/kg720 km (Hyundai’s figure)
    18-inch wheels with built-in dash cam (1,870 kg)104.7 km/kgAbout 700 km (our calculation)
    19-inch wheels (1,900 kg)95.1 km/kgAbout 636 km (our calculation)

The price list notes that real efficiency and range change with road conditions, driving style, load, maintenance and outside temperature.

    Prices in Korea

Hyundai’s 2027 price list shows three trims, each with two prices. The second assumes the car meets the eco-friendly vehicle standard under Korea’s eco-friendly vehicles law, which brings tax benefits.

    TrimBefore tax benefitsAfter tax benefits
    Modern₩80,447,000₩76,470,000
    Exclusive₩83,497,000₩79,370,000
    Prestige₩88,147,000₩83,790,000

Hyundai calls the after-benefit prices approximate. The final price depends on the options you add and is set in your sales quote, and the list can change without notice. The price list covers tax benefits only. For purchase subsidies, see the next section.

    Purchase subsidies

The zero-emission vehicle portal lists the 2026 subsidy for a hydrogen passenger car as up to ₩22.5 million from the national government and up to ₩10 million from the local government. The application period runs from February 1 to November 30, 2026.

Local governments that add their own subsidy can set conditions, such as living in their area. The portal’s guide doesn’t say anything specific about foreign residents. If you’re thinking of buying, ask your city or county office whether you qualify before you sign. The portal also has a page listing each local government’s amounts (in Korean).

Is the Nexo sold in the US, UK or Australia?

When we checked Hyundai’s official sites on October 28, 2026, the UK site listed the Nexo under hydrogen models. The US site’s Nexo address sent us to the home page, and the Australian address went to the general eco-car list. Neither showed the Nexo.

That’s what each site listed that day, not a statement about future plans. Our list of Hyundai and Kia models missing from the US, UK and Australian lineups covers the other Korean-market models you won’t find in those countries.

    Where to fill up

The government’s hydrogen station map (충전소 찾기, under 수소) lists hydrogen stations with their status, pressure, vehicle type, price and opening hours. It showed 253 stations on October 26, 2026. The site has an ENG button, but it only translates the top menu. Station names and search filters stay in Korean.

Look for 700 bar in the charger column. That’s the pressure for passenger cars like the Nexo. The 350-bar stations are for buses and trucks, and some stations have both.

Check the status and hours before you drive there, because they vary. On October 27, one Seoul station listed 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and another 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The first of those has 사전 예약제 (advance reservation) in its name, and some other stations show 예약제. Check the station’s listing before you go.

Hyundai also says the car’s navigation can plan a route around your remaining hydrogen. It shows whether you’ll reach your destination. It also shows whether stations are open, how many cars are waiting and whether refueling is currently possible.

    What a fill costs

Prices differ by station. The portal’s 2026 average was ₩10,377 per kg when we checked on October 27, 2026. On the same day, the two Seoul stations above listed ₩10,700 and ₩11,500.

The portal’s own example puts a Nexo fill at ₩65,686, for 6.33 kg and 609 km of driving, or about ₩108 per km. Those are the portal’s reference figures, and it doesn’t say which model year they’re based on. They work out to about 96 km per kg (our calculation), below Hyundai’s 107.6, so the estimator below shows a lower cost per km than the portal.

The portal also warns that what you actually pay can differ. On-site prices, operator promotions, roaming surcharges and memberships all change the amount. The portal says a 700-bar fill averages 5 to 6 kg.

Use the estimator below with the price shown at your station. If you also drive an EV, our guide to EV charging rates in Korea covers how that side works.

    Tolls and taxes

Hydrogen cars get the same highway toll discount as EVs: 30% off in 2026 and 20% in 2027, only with an EV-dedicated Hi-Pass unit. It’s scheduled to end on December 31, 2027. Our guide to Korea highway tolls and Hi-Pass has the conditions.

On the acquisition tax you pay when you register the car, a hydrogen fuel cell car gets up to ₩1.4 million off until December 31, 2027. For the annual car tax, ask your local tax office which rate applies to a hydrogen car. Our guide to car tax in Korea for foreigners explains both taxes.

    Before you buy one

    • Find the 700-bar stations near your home and work on the government map, and check their hours.
    • Note any station marked 예약제. You’ll have to book there.
    • Plan longer trips around stations that are open when you’ll pass. Don’t count on one that closes early.
    • Ask your local government about the subsidy before you sign. The 2026 application window closes on November 30.
    • Use the real price at your station, not the national average, to budget.

Prices, subsidies and station hours change often. Check the portal and your sales quote before you decide.
